Finding Your People

Why Direction Cannot Happen in Isolation — Your direction always includes finding the people to do it with

Opening grounding — never skip this

We Breath

Breathe in slowly. As you inhale, say silently: “I am not alone in this.” As you exhale: “There are people made for what I am made for.” Repeat four times. Direction is not a solo project. It was never meant to be.

Core teaching

Read slowly. This is a companion, not a lecture.

A primary inheritance deficit from ACEs is the inability to trust group belonging. Attachment wounds, abandonment wounds, the “everyone eventually leaves” lie — they make genuine community feel dangerous even when it is safe. So ACE survivors often attempt direction in isolation. Isolation feels protective, but it keeps the work small, unsupported, and brittle.

Old wisdom and new research agree: we go further together. Human capacities are distributed, not concentrated — which means what you cannot do alone, you can do together. The interdependence is not a weakness in the design. It is the design.

No one carries the whole thing. The hand needs the eye; the planner needs the doer; the visionary needs the steady one. Community is not supplemental to direction — it is the context where direction becomes fully itself.

For ACE survivors, isolation is sophisticated self-protection, not laziness. If the work is done alone, no one can leave, betray, or disappoint. But alone is also where direction dies — from lack of fuel, lack of witness, lack of the helping-up that is structural rather than optional. You do not need a large team. You need a faithful few: people who share the vision, complement your gifts, and provide safety.

Wisdom texts

Words to stand on.

African proverb

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
Trauma-informed commentary — Isolation is fast. That is its seduction. But direction is a long road, and the long road belongs to people walking it together.

Attributed to Helen Keller

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”
Trauma-informed commentary — Keller's entire life was proof — every door she opened had Anne Sullivan's hand on it too. The faithful few are not a fallback plan. They are how it works.

Desmond Tutu

“My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.”
Trauma-informed commentary — The African idea of ubuntu — a person is a person through other people — lands hardest on those who learned early that people were the danger. The wound happened in relationship. So does the healing. So does the direction.

Somatic practice — essential, not optional

Direction Community Inventory

In your journal, write the names of people who: (1) believe in your direction, (2) complement what you bring, (3) will tell you the truth, (4) will stay when things are hard. If the list is short or empty — that is not a failure. It is the next assignment. Write one practical step you can take this week toward building one such relationship.

07 · Declaration — speak this aloud

“My direction is not a solo project. I was made to do this with people —”

“to receive from others what I cannot generate alone, and to offer what they cannot produce without me. I am building my community, one courageous step at a time.”

If you are in crisis right now

This journey is a companion, not a substitute for care. If you are in the United States and need immediate support, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) — free, confidential, 24/7. If you are elsewhere, contact your local emergency number or a trusted person today. Reaching out is not weakness. It is the bravest module there is.
